Background The Procera System introduced over 8 years ago by Nobelpharma has now been totally revolutionised. In its original form we were able to fabricate Titanium crowns by copy milling and spark erosion techniques and the bond Ticeram porcelain onto these copings. We at Designer Dentition were involved in the original launch of the Procera System and did technical consultancy work testing the bonding techniques and preparing the technical manuals. Stephen also spent two days in Cologne where his work was photo graphed at each stage.

At this time it was also possible to produce titanium implant beams, which were laser welded together, resulting in unsurpassed precision of fit and totally passive constructions. These techniques were years ahead of their time, as Nobelpharma were world leaders in implant design as well as their experience in precision milling and spark erosion. This position has now been well and truly established worldwide, not only in the implant field

Since those early days the company has now been renamed Nobel Biocare and most recently acquired Steri-Oss, the market leader in the U.S.A.

Procera Today

Today the Procera System has finally come of age. Not only can titanium substructures, crowns and custom designed implant abutments be fabricated, but also complete ceramic crowns and bridges.

Without doubt the Procera Allceram copings are the strongest available Hi-Purity alumina materials available. A secret industrial process achieves the flexural strength of 687 Mpa, which is leading edge ceramic powder technology. A process that cannot be reproduced in a conventional dental laboratory. By industrial production, it is possible to produce copings of the highest purity, and this takes place at Sandvik in Sweden.

Designer Dentitions Role

Designer Dentition is a Procera network laboratory and as such, has access to the Procera System. In our laboratory we have a scanner which we use to scan the dies produced from the dentists impression. Once the dies are scanned into the computer we use the Procera software to design the coping, bridge unit or custom abutment. Each unit is individually designed on screen, all the parameters that the production unit requires are set and once the design has been finalised the files are sent via modem to Sweden.

After fabrication the Procera units are sent back to the laboratory in East Grinstead by courier and work then starts to complete the ceramic part of the restorations. Custom implant abutments can also be fabricated using 3D computer-assisted design and manufacture. We have the benefit of being able to compensate for any incorrect positioning of the fixture by customising the profile, size and alignment of the abutment, a major breakthrough in implantology.

Back to the Future

Currently we are producing single Procera Allceram crowns as well as bridgework; these can be placed anywhere in the mouth. All single units carry a manufacturers 5 year warranty against material failure. The first manufacturers warranty of its type ever, for a dental restoration. This year 1999 we will also be fabricating veneers and other applications.

Already Nobelbiocare has developed a camera to be used instead of a de ntal impression; no this is not science fiction but actual reality. The photogrammic camera is currently undergoing clinical trials. Believe it or not! It is intended that immediately the fixtures are placed, at the same appointment the digital photograph is taken. The Digital image is then transferred to a computer and the design procedure starts from that point . Even at this primary stage it will be possible to design and fabricate from fixture head up, the custom designed abutments. You can imagine the time saved with this process, combined with precision alignment and fit. Optimum aesthetics have become a reality- not a dream.
